"French Spice" starts today!

French Spice: an initiative entirely dedicated to French gastronomy – Nov 1-30, 2010 in Miami.

For the first time in the frame of ‘French Week Miami’*, fifteen restaurants provide menus showcasing the scrumptious tri-coloured delicacies.

What is ‘French Spice’?
The restaurants that said yes to the program provide a menu particular to the occasion. They propose a choice between:
2 or 3 appetizers
2 or 3 entrees
2 or 3 desserts

For an afternoon meal and dinner, there are ‘Bistro’ menus as well as ‘Gourmet’ menus available at unique prices. More details: the Bistro menus ($15 afternoon and $25 evening, drinks and service not included) and for the Gourmet menus ($22 afternoon and $35 evening, drinks and service not included). For your dinner, a complimentary glass of wine or Champagne is included after your order of one of these menus.

When does ‘French Spice’ take place?
It runs from November 1st through November 30th, 2010.

Dimanche 24 Octobre 2010: Election des conseillers à l'Assemblée des Français de l'Etranger

Votez pour vos conseillers UMP-UFE à l'Assemblée des Français de l'Etranger (AFE) pour la Côte Est des Etats-Unis. Le 16 juin 2010, le Conseil d'Etat a décidé d'annuler l'élection des conseillers à l'AFE du 7 juin 2009 pour les circonscriptions de Washington et de Mexico.

C'est pour « manquement de l'administration à produire efficacement les signatures de référence nécessaires à l'identification des électeurs ayant choisi de voter par correspondance » que le Conseil d'Etat a annulé le scrutin. En effet, pour le mode de scrutin par correspondance, l'électeur envoie son bulletin dans une enveloppe d'identification sur laquelle il appose sa signature. Celle-ci doit être comparée à une signature de référence qui doit figurer dans un registre tenu par les consulats. Concernant la circonscription de Washington, 350 bulletins de vote n'ont pu être comptabilisés.

Orlando Florida Massive Back to School Charity Event/August 14, 2010

Back to School Charity Event Expects Over 20,000 in Attendance and Will Help Children Attending Central Florida Schools with 9000 Free Backpacks, School Supplies, Immunizations and Health Care Services.

On Saturday, August 14 from 10:00AM to 2:00PM at the Amway Arena, thousands of Central Florida school children will receive a backpack stuffed with school supplies and access to immunizations, dental screenings for children, vision screening, haircuts, health information and much more: All free, thanks to the compassion and generosity of local employers, nonprofit organizations and caring citizens, like you. Last year we had a reported 20,000 attendees and the line to enter the event was two miles long. “In view of the current state of the economy and daunting disparities in accessing quality health care, it is time to act! Vos conseillères à l'AFE Christiane Ciccone et Corinne Narassiguin vous informent sur l'actualité des Français de l'Etranger: Simplification des démarches administratives. La circulaire conjointe du ministre de l’Intérieur et du ministre des Affaires étrangères signée le 1er mars 2010 devrait simplifier les démarches pour obtenir le renouvellement de ses pièces d’identité.

• Pour un renouvellement de titre, ou quand le demandeur possèdera déjà un autre titre d’identité sécurisé, aucun acte d'état civil ne sera nécessaire.
• Pour les Français nés à l’étranger ou dans les départements ou territoires anciennement sous souveraineté française, dont les actes d’état civil ont été établis par les postes consulaires et diplomatiques ou par le SCEC, la circulaire confirme que ces actes suffiront à vérifier la nationalité française du demandeur.
• Pour les demandeurs nés en France mais dont les parents sont nés hors de France, l’acte d’état civil d’un parent, par le Service central d’Etat civil ou par un poste diplomatique et consulaire, suffira à vérifier la nationalité française de celui-ci et donc du demandeur.
• La carte nationale d'identité et le passeport sont désormais interchangeables : la présentation d'une carte nationale d'identité « plastifiée » permet sans difficulté d'obtenir un passeport. De même, la présentation d'un passeport électronique ou biométrique permet d'obtenir une carte nationale d'identité.
• Les démarches à accomplir en cas de renouvellement sont allégées, ce qui raccourcira les délais d'obtention et facilitera la tâche des usagers : la présentation d'une carte nationale d'identité plastifiée ou d'un passeport électronique ou biométrique suffit désormais, en effet, pour renouveler ce titre. La nationalité n'a pas à être vérifiée et l'usager n'a plus à se procurer un acte d'état civil lors d'un renouvellement de titre.
• Enfin, dans les cas où elle demeure strictement nécessaire, la vérification de la nationalité est effectuée en priorité à partir des pièces les plus faciles à obtenir par l'usager : la saisine du greffe du tribunal d'instance en vue de la délivrance d'un certificat de nationalité française ne sera plus qu'une solution de dernier recours et tout à fait exceptionnelle.

Retraites / Pensions

Les pensions de retraite françaises ont été revalorisées de 0,9 % à partir du 1er avril 2010. Malheureusement, l'euro ayant perdu plus de 20 % par rapport au dollar depuis le début de l'année, cette augmentation passera inaperçue pour les retraités qui résident aux États-Unis.

Les pensions de retraite des Français de l'étranger sont soumises à un prélèvement à la source de 3,2 % (cotisation d'assurance maladie). Cette cotisation passe à 4,2 % sur les retraites complémentaires.

However, because the Euro lost more than 20% of its value as compared to the US$, French pensioners living in the USA will actually receive less.

French pensions paid to a resident in another country (outside of the EU) are subject to a 3.2% health insurance deduction (4.2% for supplementary pensions).

USCIS Proposed Fee Rule

USCIS is seeking public comment on a proposed federal rule to adjust fees for immigration benefit applications and petitions.

You may view the proposed rule HERE.

Full details are contained the Federal Register posting including a schedule of the proposed fees. The proposed rule would increase overall fees by a weighted average of about 10 percent but would not increase the fee for the naturalization application.
