Les autorités sanitaires mexicaines ont déclaré, mi-avril, la survenue d’une épidémie de grippe ayant débuté mi-mars. Cette épidémie s’est propagée aux Etats Unis qui ont isolé un nouveau type de virus grippal (A/H1N1/2009). Une centaine de cas confirmés, tous d’évolution favorable, ont été notifiés dans une dizaine d’Etats des Etats-Unis. L’OMS a annoncé, le 29 avril, le passage au niveau 5 de l’échelle d’extension de l’épidémie dans le monde.
Le Centre de Crise du Ministère des Affaires Etrangères et Européennes a activé, en liaison étroite avec la cellule interministérielle de crise mise en place au Ministère français de la Santé, une plate-forme de réponse téléphonique pour informer le public de l’évolution de la situation.

Point de la situation :
1/ Au 30 avril au matin, une centaine de cas de grippe A/H1N1 ont été identifiés aux Etats-Unis. Toutes les informations sur l’évolution de cette épidémie sont accessibles sur le site du gouvernement américain : www.cdc.gov/swineflu. Un cas importé (nourrisson mexicain) est décédé dans un hôpital au Texas. Vous pouvez également vous informer sur le site (en français) de l'Institut de Veille Sanitaire : www.invs.sante.fr.
2/ Les autorités fédérales ont déclaré cette épidémie « urgence sanitaire nationale ». C’est une procédure habituelle qui permet de dégager des personnels et des fonds fédéraux pour concentrer l’effort sur la prévention de la propagation du virus au niveau des Etats.
3/ Les autorités américaines encouragent les résidents des régions touchées par l’épidémie et les voyageurs à suivre les recommandations de base suivantes :
- se laver les mains fréquemment si possible à l’aide d’une solution alcoolisée,
- essayer d’éviter les contacts avec les personnes malades,
- en cas de symptômes grippaux, consulter un médecin, rester chez soi et limiter les contacts.
Les symptômes de la grippe A/H1N1 sont similaires à ceux de la grippe ordinaire : forte fièvre, toux, maux de gorge, courbatures, maux de tête, frissons et fatigue.
Le Ministère de la Santé américain a indiqué que la grippe A/H1N1 ne se transmettait pas par la consommation de porc ou de produits à base de porc.
4/ Les services de l'Ambassade de France à Washington et les Consulats sont en contact permanent avec les autorités américaines. Celles-ci ont confirmé que les étrangers résidents ou de passage seraient pleinement pris en charge par les structures sanitaires américaines.

MESSAGE OF THE DAY – TO DATE THERE ARE NO CONFIRMED CASES OF THE SWINE FLU IN THE STATE OF FLORIDA. THE STATE OF FLORIDA IS READY TO RESPOND TO SWINE FLU AND URGES ALL RESIDENTS TO FOLLOW ANY PREVENTATIVE MEASURES ISSUED BY LOCAL AND STATE OFFICIALS.
Current Threat
While no cases have been identified in Florida at this time, cases of swine flu have been confirmed in the U.S., according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There are an undetermined number of cases in Mexico reaching into the hundreds.
State Actions
Florida has prepared for influenza events:
The State EOC is monitoring the situation and conducting coordination calls with Team partners on the local, state and federal levels.
All state laboratories have the facilities to safely identify influenza samples.
The state has almost 100 sentinel physicians – local doctors in communities across the state who report any unusual influenza like activity to DOH and the CDC.
The State has the ability to monitor the sale of over the counter drugs, as an early warning sign for increased influenza activity.
Florida is receiving frequent updates from the CDC, and is working with local health departments to monitor the situation and immediately follow up on any suspected cases.
Public Actions – from the Florida Department of Health
People with respiratory illness should stay home from work or school to avoid spreading infections, including influenza, to others in the community.
Avoid close contact with people who are coughing or otherwise appear ill.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
Wash hands frequently to lessen the spread of respiratory illness.
People experiencing cough, fever and fatigue, possibly along with diarrhea and vomiting, should contact their physician.
If you think you have influenza, please call your health care provider and discuss whether you need to be seen in their office or emergency department or stay home.
Other Notes
Swine influenza viruses are not transmitted by food and a person cannot get swine influenza from eating pork products. The infections appear to spread from person to person. Under a doctor's supervision, drugs called antivirals can reduce the consequences of contracting the flu, if taken early.

Out-Of-State Tuition Fees Exemption
The Florida-France Institute links the resources of Florida's 11 public universities and 28 community and junior colleges with those of state government and businesses to forge a network of partnerships with French educational, governmental, and private sector institutions. The Legislature took a step to further the interaction of students from countries represented by the Linkage Institutes, and authorized the exemption of out-of-state tuition fees for up to 25 full-time equivalent French students to attend Florida's public universities and community colleges.
