Fashionistas turn our in LBDs and pearls for screening of 'Coco Before Chanel' at Enzian. by Jean Patteson /Orlando Sentinel

Little black dresses and pearls were much in evidence at the Enzian this evening, as admirers of the one-and-only Coco Chanel came out in force for a screening of Coco Before Chanel.

The French American Business Council (FABCO) had bought a block of seats, and it was fun to hear French being spoken in the theater as well as on the screen. A very special member of the audience was Rose Monique Vartanian, who once worked for Chanel in Paris -- and even made a suit for Chanel. After she retired, Rose Monique moved to New York, then San Francisco, and finally Orlando, where she has family. A denimutive woman in a loose black dress, she said she loved Chanel when she worked for her, and loves her still.

And I loved the movie. Five stars. Go see it for the acting, the scenery, and the insights into the early life of one of the greatest designers ever. ... Read more

Remise de la Legion D'Honneur

Remise de la Legion d’Honneur by Honorary Consul, France, Brigitte Dagot on Wednesday Nov 11, 12:30 PM at Lake Highland Preparatory School, 901 N. Highland Avenue, Orlando, 32803. Qu'est-ce que la Légion d'Honneur? The Legion of Honor was created two centuries ago by Emperor Napoleon. It is the highest distinction France can confer on a citizen or a foreigner. It recognizes exceptional services to France and reward eminent military and civil merits. No one deserves the Legion of Honor more than these American veterans who fought to give France its freedom and independence back. Pourquoi la France remet-elle ces médailles? Since 2004, the 60th anniversary of the Normandy invasion, France has sought to award the honor to U.S veterans who fought on French soil as a gesture of gratitude. The Legion of Honor is a way to thank these young American men for their courage, dedication and sacrifices; and prove that France cannot, and will not forget them.

AFGO's French classes for the Fall

As you may know, Alliance Française of Greater Orlando (AFGO) is offering private and semi-private classes in French for both adults and children aged 7 to 15. Given the success of their French School and due to some recent specific requests, they are considering expanding the scope of classes to include children aged 4 to 6. This will not be another daycare center. AFGO immersion courses/classes will provide the younger children with a wonderful opportunity to open their minds to another language and culture.

The courses/classes will be taught by a highly-experienced native French speaking teacher, specialized in instructing young children. There will also be an additional adult to supervise the class. Under the instruction and watch supervision of these ladies, your children will play, sing, dance, read, talk about shapes and colors, and have fun together… all in French.

AFGO are exploring the feasibility of this program on the following preliminary basis:

· Schedule: a small class of 3 to 5 children on Saturday afternoon, from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm. Should this program become very popular, we will also consider holding classes from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm weekdays.
· Targeted launch date: September 26, 2009.
· Location: AFGO office, 1516 East Colonial Dr., Orlando, FL 32803. Tel: 407-895-1300

· Price: $ 195.00 for a block of 10 hours. Possibility of discount for multiple registrations in the same family.

Should you potentially be interested, please send an e-mail at: alliancefrancaiseorlando@gmail.com in which you will provide the following data:
· Parent name (last and first): …………………………………………………………

· How many children aged 4 to 6 to be registered:…………………………

· E-mail address:……………………………………………………………………………..

Grippe A/H1N1

OEM ADVISORY UPDATE: April 28, 2009

Current EOC Operational Status: Level 3 – Monitoring. Update: Swine Flu
The Office of Emergency Management will continue to monitor.

State of Florida

State Emergency Response Team

Tuesday, April 28, 2009

MESSAGE OF THE DAY – TO DATE THERE ARE NO CONFIRMED CASES OF THE SWINE FLU IN THE STATE OF FLORIDA. THE STATE OF FLORIDA IS READY TO RESPOND TO SWINE FLU AND URGES ALL RESIDENTS TO FOLLOW ANY PREVENTATIVE MEASURES ISSUED BY LOCAL AND STATE OFFICIALS.

Current Threat

While no cases have been identified in Florida at this time, cases of swine flu have been confirmed in the U.S., according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There are an undetermined number of cases in Mexico reaching into the hundreds.

State Actions

Florida has prepared for influenza events:

The State EOC is monitoring the situation and conducting coordination calls with Team partners on the local, state and federal levels.
All state laboratories have the facilities to safely identify influenza samples.
The state has almost 100 sentinel physicians – local doctors in communities across the state who report any unusual influenza like activity to DOH and the CDC.
The State has the ability to monitor the sale of over the counter drugs, as an early warning sign for increased influenza activity.
Florida is receiving frequent updates from the CDC, and is working with local health departments to monitor the situation and immediately follow up on any suspected cases.

Public Actions – from the Florida Department of Health

People with respiratory illness should stay home from work or school to avoid spreading infections, including influenza, to others in the community.
Avoid close contact with people who are coughing or otherwise appear ill.
Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
Wash hands frequently to lessen the spread of respiratory illness.
People experiencing cough, fever and fatigue, possibly along with diarrhea and vomiting, should contact their physician.
If you think you have influenza, please call your health care provider and discuss whether you need to be seen in their office or emergency department or stay home.

Other Notes

Swine influenza viruses are not transmitted by food and a person cannot get swine influenza from eating pork products. The infections appear to spread from person to person. Under a doctor's supervision, drugs called antivirals can reduce the consequences of contracting the flu, if taken early.

The CDC has created a Webpage with information at www.cdc.gov/swineflu
